ICON A5 to be auctioned off for Young Eagles

 ICON Aircraft is offering one of its new amphibious light-sport aircraft for auction at the annual Experimental Aircraft Association‘s Gathering of Young Eagles during this year’s AirVenture.

The July 28 Gathering of Eagles is part of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the 64th annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention, which will be held July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. The Gathering of Eagles fundraiser usually attracts more than 1,000 people to support EAA’s youth aviation education programs.

The ICON A5 was first announced as a 2016 auction lot at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2015 by ICON officials as well as EAA CEO/Chairman Jack Pelton and Sean D. Tucker, legendary air show pilot and chairman of EAA’s Young Eagles program.

“I had the opportunity to fly this airplane last year, and ICON has given us a flying machine that is superb for flying adventure and excitement,” Pelton said. “As EAA aims to grow participation in aviation, innovative aircraft such as the ICON A5 will inspire more people to be part of the world of flight. We’re very excited to have this airplane as part of the Gathering of Eagles auction on July 28.”

Bidding on the airplane will take place live at the auction, as well as through telephone bids. It will be part of an extensive auction lineup that in past years has included one-of-a-kind collector Ford Mustangs specially built by the Ford Motor Company, as well as flying experiences with aviation personalities. Additional auction lots are currently being accepted through EAA’s donor relations office.

Cutting-Edge A350 XWB arrives in the United States

Atlanta is first of five U.S. cities to see the A350 XWB on its Americas Demo Tour

As it touched down in Atlanta, the newest commercial aircraft in the world, the Airbus A350 XWB, kicked off the U.S. leg of its tour of the Americas. The demo tour features a flight test version of the aircraft, which Airbus is showing off to investors and airlines in Atlanta, Newark, Chicago and Milwaukee before the general public can experience the A350 XWB at EAA’s AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

While it is in Atlanta, Delta Air Lines employees will tour the aircraft, familiarizing themselves with its layout and features. For many of them it will be their first opportunity to get a closer look at what will become the newest member of its fleet in 2017, when Delta accepts the first delivery of its 25 A350 XWBs. Delta currently operates Airbus A319, A320 and A330 aircraft, with additional outstanding orders for each type. 

The A350-900 that is in the U.S. this week is a flight test aircraft featuring a two-class cabin. It seats 42 in lie-flat, business-class seats, which are four abreast, and 210 economy-class seats. For passengers, the aircraft will provide new levels of comfort, with extra space in all classes. It features wider panoramic windows, larger overhead stowage compartments and the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity. 

The A350 XWB also features the latest in aerodynamic design, carbon-fiber fuselage and wings, and new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. These technologies translate into a 25-percent reduction in fuel burn and emissions as well as lower maintenance costs. 

As of the end of June 2015, the A350 XWB had won 781 firm orders worldwide from 40 customers. Currently, three North American customers have orders for a total of 82 A350 XWBs. 

Lazydays Partners With SUN ‘n FUN On Fly-in

Lazydays RV has partnered with SUN ‘n FUN on the 41st Annual International Fly-In & Expo, according to a press release.

The SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In & Expo will take place April 21–26 at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, Fla. All proceeds will benefit the Aerospace Center for Excellence on the Sun ‘n Fun campus. The facility boasts aviation-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculums through year-round programs and activities, and is also home for the Central Florida Aerospace Academy.

Lazydays will provide 20 RV units to serve as mobile offices and hospitality stations to accommodate the SUN ‘n FUN staff throughout the six-day event. In addition, Lazydays will be setting up an on-site RV display and sale with 15 units on “Rocky Road” near the RV campground. The exhibitor area will feature a Lazydays booth with prizes and giveaways for guests from noon until 2 p.m., on April 25-26.

JT Strange and his family are in the process of building their new home alongside their just finished hangar in the Obannon Creek Aerodrome Airpark located in Goshen, Ohio. The newly-built hangar needed a big 45 ft. x 15 ft. 11” door for his Cessna 182T, which he also uses for business in nearby Milford, Ohio.

Airport Day is designed to showcase the airport and the important role it plays in providing service not only to Fullerton,but to neighboring communities throughout Orange County.  The Orange County Fire Authority, the Anaheim Police Department and the California Highway Patrol will participate by showcasing their air operations based at the Fullerton Airport.

New innovative Schweiss Moving Gate gives versatility

As a leader in safety advocacy, Avemco will be launching their 2013 Safety Education Tour at the conference.  The tour will include speaking, webinar, online, print, events and presentations.  The focus will be to encourage all aviators to participate in relevant training, offer information compiled from claims data to help avoid accidents and provide expertise about insurance that will benefit aircraft owners and renters.

Over 12,000 pilots are expected to attend the annual Conference where Adams’ presentation will focus on general claims information from accidents occurring in the Pacific Northwest including those that didn’t make it to the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) files.

Gulfstream Celebrates The 25th Anniversary of the First Flight of the GIV

The Gulfstream hompage reports is the 25th anniversary of the first flight of the Gulfstream IV.

“The GIV was the aircraft that launched a thousand Gulfstream aircraft,” said Joe Lombardo, president, Gulfstream. “It formed the foundation for designing and building the G300, G400, G350 and G450. The aircraft’s first flight was a milestone and turning point for the company.”

Longtime Gulfstream employee Jim Gallagher, an acoustics engineer for the GIV program, said the aircraft revolutionized the industry. More than 520 of the 536 jets produced in the GIV series are still in operation.

Test Establishes Gulfstream G650 As World’s Fastest Civil Aircraft

Gulfstream has announced the Gulfstream G650 recently reached Mach 0.995 as part of its 1,800-hour flight-test program. This accomplishment establishes G650 As World’s Fastest Civil Aircraft.

According to Gulfstream, the aircraft achieved this speed during flutter testing, which evaluates the aircraft’s damping responses following an input from an external test device.

Flutter testing is performed at a variety of frequencies, speeds, altitudes, weights and centers of gravity. In order to achieve the maximum speed of Mach 0.995, Gulfstream experimental test pilots Tom Horne and Gary Freeman along with flight test engineer Bill Osborne took Serial Number (S/N) 6001 into a dive, pitching the aircraft’s nose 16 to 18 degrees below the horizon.

During the dive, flutter exciters introduced a range of vibration frequencies to the wing, tail and flight control surfaces to ensure the aircraft naturally dampened out the oscillations without further action from the pilots.
